 SDIA offers ASX ADA1 Accreditation
ASX confirms that the Accredited Derivatives Adviser regime (ADA) will continue to be a requirement under ASX Rules
for advisers employed by Market Participants who are advising retail clients on exchange-traded options and/or warrants.
The relevant ASX Market Rule is 8.3. Level 1 Derivatives Adviser Accreditation (ADA1) covers advice that does not
expose the client to potential margin calls. Thus, ADA1 covers the purchase and sale of warrants, the purchase (taking)
of options and the selling (writing) of stock options that are fully covered by a holding in the underlying shares. Advice
involving other option-writing strategies requires Level 2 Derivatives Adviser Accreditation (ADA2).
To be accredited, advisers must successfully complete a closed-book, supervised, multiple-choice examination (via
Kaplan) and then be nominated by their employing ASX Market Participant.
OR Alternatively, advisers seeking ADA1 accreditation can now undertake the SDIA Derivatives Accreditation,
which is recognised by ASX for the purposes of ADA1 accreditation. The SDIA Derivatives Accreditation is one of several
elective accreditations under the new SDIA Professional Program.
ASX requires all advisers to have their accreditation renewed every 2 years. The next renewal will be conducted in the
fourth quarter 2008. ASX regards derivatives accreditation renewal as important for 3 main reasons:
1. Advisers are provided with a refresher on elements of advising that have changed or that people are prone to get
wrong;
2. Market Participants have an opportunity to review their accredited adviser lists to ensure that everything is up-to-date
and accurate; and
3. By renominating an adviser for derivatives adviser accreditation, the Market Participant is endorsing that adviser as a
person appropriate to be advising retail clients on exchange-traded options and/or warrants.
Renewal of derivatives adviser accreditation, as in previous years, will involve the issue of a set of notes, followed by a
short, supervised, multiple-choice exam conducted in broker offices.
